Heroes Here & Now: Caring through COVID at Forth Valley Royal Hospital (2020)

During Lockdown I have been creating a set of portraits of frontline key workers. I asked for nominations from the community and have subsequently created around 50 portraits, which will be gifted to the nominees after they have been exhibited. Originally these were to be seen as tributes to the people in the community as well as documenting these unprecedented times.

I adopted water-based media, acrylic ink and egg tempera, in part for expediency but also because I wanted to work on paper rather than canvas.

I was particularly struck that despite being virtually entirely covered by PPE, the subjects are immediately recognised by those who know them. This has made me wish to explore what are the essential qualities of a portrait in expressing the sitter’s identity.

Artlink Central arranged for a set of the portraits to be exhibited at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.
